Why Is It Difficult To Stop Smoking

Smoking Addiction
Smoking is a terrible nicotine addiction and it has been proven that it can be more addictive than heroin. Overcoming a Smoking Addiction takes patience and perseverance. Many smokers have tried several times to stop smoking before they were successful.
For over 10 years, I worked in the health care profession and I seen the debilitating affects smoking can have on your lungs, body function and respiratory system. I have seen patients barely able to take there next breath but wanting to be wheeled down to the smoking lounge so they can keep smoking. Most of these patients were on portable oxygen concentrators full time and half of them were placed on ventilators to assist them with breathing at one point or another in there life.
When I first started in the health care profession, I used to get on my soap box and explain to each patient about the terrible side effects of smoking. I would go into details about what happens to their lungs, immune system, arteries and how the blood supply becomes depleted in their extremities. Did you ever know or realize why a smoker has a ruddy complexion? I can always pick out a smoker or a previous smoker in a crowd. A person who smokes depletes the oxygen in their veins and arteries and as a result, they loose the healthy glow to their face and skin. Our veins are very close to the surface of our skin and when they are well oxygenated it gives our skin its healthy glow. If a person smokes there is not a sufficient amount of oxygen at the skins surface which prevents there skin from appearing healthy.
Now that I have convinced all you smokers to quit…or have I? I eventually realized no matter how much I preached or gave my daily dissertations it was not working. Even being fresh out of college I was convinced I could save smokers years of grief if they could just follow my easy instructions on how to quit smoking cigarettes. But I was just young, ambitious and naïve. I could not empathize with my patients since I never smoked. I eventually realized this smoking addiction was bigger than me.
Smoking is Physical and Mental
Smoking is a physical addiction as well as mental. Why a person decides to quit smoking it is a very personal matter. Only the individual knows when the right time is to stop smoking. They have to weigh the benefits of smoking against the risks. Provoking and pressuring a person is not going to persuade them to quit smoking sooner. A person will only stop smoking when they have firmly placed their feet in the sand. When you make up your mind, regardless of the addiction, you will be able to fight the dragon.
Tips to Quit Smoking

Whatever you decide to do, make a plan, stick to your plan and picture yourself overcoming the obstacle. We can never conquer our fears or addictions unless we see ourselves successful. Be a champion to inspire others by beating the addiction instead of the addiction beating you! Not easy indeed. As someone said to me when I was giving up a long time ago, you have to learn to hate smoking - the smell, the idea of your lungs being blackened etc
I hope your article helps some people.
Great Hub Good info
This is a great hub and it must be hard to give it up. Well written, thank you.
I found it relatively easy to give up smoking when I found a good enough reason to, but I have heard of people who continued to smoke even after it cost them their legs. That is what you call a real addiction, probably never going to be able to stop people with that level of addiction smoking.
I quit cold turkey 8 years ago. Rough in the beginning, very rough. But, I'm hanging in there now.
Yes it is so hard to quit. this one. But I realize the main problem is that I do not want to quit. Anyway, thanks for the great tips.
Great hub and advice. I quit over 10 years ago, it was tough, I just laid them down.

Great Hub hehehe I smoke too though... Welcome to HP and nice Author score you have since you're still a neophyte... :D
I really like the given tips to quit, but I have got some additional information of utter importance:
Nicotine patches themselves do not really help you to stop smoking cigarets. They of course take away your physical addiction in the first place. But after you emptied your box of patches, you are not a non-smoker!
Using nicotine patches, you have to reduce the amount of nicotine you insert into your body regulaly, by cutting the patches into pieces. This is the only way to decrease your bodies addiction towards nicotine.
Many people are actually desperate to quit, use the patches and then - fail. And thats only because they do not get the information they necessarily need.
smoking is easy to stop. BAN smoking and stop cigarettes being produced and promoted. Freedom of choice? A smoker is an addict that the goverment taxes to death. If cigarettes were not available to buy how long would it take for people to start enjoying a healthier existence? Not long.
Nice info! I don't smoke at all. When I was young, my father was a smoker. He stopped smoking as we (his children) kept urging him to stop. He is now healthier and stronger even though he is older. And best of all, his temper is better than before.
I admire his determination because back in the days, there were not that many types of aids that help smokers to quit.
Nice hub...The point to quit smoking is really precious ...
Generally I was a smoker..but now I dont take that so much; only on occasions. Once, My one friend suggests me to take Nicotine Gum..and after taking that I have seen that I cant smoke cigar...its feeling vomiting......then slowly..its stopped..

Thank you Cheri for sharing this with me. I can vouch for nicotine addiction as being difficult to overcome. you are absolutely correct, no one can force anyone else to quit, as that is a decision that they have to make themselves for whatever the reason.
